Or more appropriately, how to get rid of it.

First off, let me say there are no magic pills to get you ripped.

I know, shocking to hear from a guy who owns a supplement company!

That doesn’t mean there aren’t supplements that help, and we’ll talk about that in a bit, but just know there are no “quick fixes” or “secret formulas” of magical elixir that drops the fat overnight…

While I wish that were possible (and that I was the only guy with the formula!:-)), the truth is it takes focused effort at doing the right things over the appropriate period of time to get you to where you want to be.

So let’s dive into it.

Fat Burning 101

Unfortunately, your body hates to burn fat…and it works really hard to make sure it doesn’t have to.

And there’s a good reason for it.

It’s your body’s survival mechanism to store excess fat as an emergency energy storage depot, and it only wants to use it when it has to – like when you’re stuck on the side of a mountain for three weeks with only bugs, bark, and bunny rabbits to live on.

(and you’ve got to be pretty good to get enough rabbits to keep from losing weight!)

That’s what makes losing the extra fat so hard – your body is actually fighting against you unless you can “trick” it into using fat as an energy source.

And how do you do that?

Your body’s primary and desired energy source is carbohydrates. But if we restrict your carbohydrate intake and operate at a slight caloric deficit (taking in less calories than you require), we force your body to start burning fat as an energy source – also known as ketosis.

Problem is restricting carbs is HARD since we’re so used to eating them in almost EVERYTHING we consume these days.

Carbs are everywhere, so keeping them restricted can be challenging at first.  But once you get the hang of it, it’s not impossible as long as you can control your cravings (more on that later).

In fact, you may actually like it because it means you get to eat more lean meats and healthy fats, like steak, chicken, shrimp, fish, eggs, avocados, and heavy whipping cream and actually LOSE body fat at the same time.

Eat More Of This – All The Time!

The basic idea is to get the majority of your calories from fat (between 65 to 80%), between 20 and 30% of calories from protein and the remainder from non-starchy carbs like broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, and the like.

Generally, a diet of fewer than 50g of carbohydrates per day will put you into ketosis quite quickly, especially if you work out and deplete the glycogen currently stored in your muscles. If this seems too extreme to you, try keeping your carbs to under 100g a day for a few weeks and see how it works for you, then drop down to below 50g per day.

There are some great parts about this eating method, and 2 of them are that 1) you get to keep all the muscle you’ve developed and 2) you won’t be hungry – the high-fat content keeps you full for long periods of time.

There is a catch to all this, but it’s actually a good one!

If you stay in a low-carb state for too long, your body adjusts and starts to shut down some of the fat-burning mechanisms in order to keep the stored energy as long as possible (remember being stuck on the side of the mountain?).

So periodically we need to remind your body it’s not going to self-destruct if it keeps up the fat burning, and we do that by eating carbs once a week.  On your “carb-up” day, you get to eat pretty much whatever you want and not worry about fat spill-over.

This might be a bit much…but you can indulge once a week without worrying about gaining fat!

Don’t go crazy or anything, but just know you’re ok to have some of that pizza or pasta you’ve been eyeing all week.

You get to put a little glycogen back in your system to help fuel your workouts, your body realizes it’s ok to keep up the fat burning, and you get to indulge a little each week!

These are the kind of catches I like!

So, that covers the diet part – simply cut carbs down to 50g or less per day and consume approximately 200 calories less per day than you need while breaking your calories into 65-80% fat and 20-30% protein.

And once you’ve achieved your fat loss goals, you can slowly add clean carbs back in and eat a more “balanced” diet while still maintaining your desired body fat levels!


Now let’s talk about the workout side of things…

While changing your diet alone to what I just outlined will make a WORLD of difference, we can accelerate things quite a bit by adding in the right weight training and cardio routines that are designed to spike your metabolism and keep it elevated.

I’ve written a couple of books and manuals on the muscle-building and fat-burning benefits of full-body workouts, so I won’t belabor the point here.  All I’ll say is that incorporating intense, full-body workouts that work all the major muscle groups via compound movements in a short period of time will help you release more testosterone, more growth hormone, and increase your heart rate to help accelerate your fat burning potential.

It will also keep it elevated for up to 24 hours after your workout which helps you get a lot more bang-for-your-buck when it comes to fat burning.

The other side of the coin is cardio…but not cardio like you’re used to.

No boring 45 minute jogs on the treadmill or riding the stationary bike for hours.


We’re Actually Going To Be Done With Cardio in 10 Minutes!

But don’t be fooled – you’ll be smoked when you’re done, because for most of that 10 minutes we’re going to be sprinting!

Yes, just like back in high-school basketball and football practice, we’re going to “run the lines”.

You can do this on a track, football field, long stretch of sidewalk in your neighborhood, and even a treadmill if you have to.

It’s pretty simple.

After a couple minute warmup jog, you sprint all out, fast as you can go, for 10-30 seconds, then jog or walk it out for 60 seconds.  Then keep repeating until you get to 10 minutes!

And that’s it – 10 minutes and your cardio is done!

And here’s the great part – there are A LOT of benefits of this type of cardio other than it’s over quick.

  • Sprints unlock and unleash your fat burning hormones that help break apart fat cells and allow them to be used by your body for fuel, and the effects can last for up to 48 hours after your workout!
  • Research has shown that three intense sprinting sessions can have the same effect as over 6 HOURS of slow boring cardio – so you’ll burn fat and get in shape faster, faster!
  • Sprinting burns more overall calories and more fat calories than long, slow cardio

Yes, sprinting does take more work than bouncing around on the eliptical, but if getting ripped is truly your goal, sprints are a faster, more efficient, and longer-lasting way to get there than slugging it out on the treadmill a few hours a week.

  • Green Tea Extract – Contains the highly thermogenic and antioxidant compounds epigallocatechin and polyphenols. These substances activate the central nervous system, which increases the body’s ability to burn calories and unwanted fat cells through the thermogenic process.
    • A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrated that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a measure of metabolism), plus also had a significant effect on fat oxidation.
    • The researchers found that green tea extract actually translated to a 35-43% increase in daytime thermogenesis! None of the research subjects reported any side effects, and no significant differences in heart rates or blood pressure were noticed.
  • Green Coffee Extract – a recent study suggested that the chlorogenic acid found in green coffee, which is what all coffee looks like before it’s roasted, helped pre-obese test subjects to lose an average of 16lbs and 4% body fat while supplementing with green coffee extract compared to a placebo.
  • Raspberry Ketones– A study done at the University of Japan suggested that raspberry ketones suppressed fat absorption through an increased burning of calories even when the body was at rest.
    • The Japanese study also demonstrated that RK increased norepinephine-induced lipolysis.  This means it increased the rate at which fat is broken down when norepinephine compound is present.  This compound is produced when our body is in an active kinetic state, meaning it helps accelerate fat loss when we’re active (working out).
    • The study also suggested there was a RK-induced increase in the volume of hormone sensitive lipase, which helps fat cells mobilize and excrete fatty acids, making them more easily burned by the body for fuel
    • A separate South Korean study suggested that raspberry ketones boosted both the expression and secretion of adiponectin.  Adiponectin is a protein hormone that helps with multiple metabolic processes.  Two of these processes are the regulation of glucose and fatty acid catabolism, two things we want to enhance for our fat-burning purposes.
  • Cayenne Extract - Cayenne peppers naturally contain a chemical substance called capsaicin that raises your levels of the neurotransmitter hormone norepinephrine. This messenger chemical prompts fat cells to release more of their fatty acids to be burned as energy.
  • Evodia Extract - Evodia is a tree that is native to China and Korea.  Evodia fruit is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and recent studies have shown that it has a similar effect as capsaicin, slightly increasing the body’s core temperature to help  metabolize free fatty acids in the blood stream, thus preventing them from being stored as fat.
  • Naringin – an extract from grapefruit, naringin helps extend the half-life of many of the ingredients in the formula (makes them last longer) while also increasing your body’s sensitivity to insulin and helping regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Chromium – Results of a double-blind, placebo controlled clinical study published in Current Therapeutic Research show that chromium aids in the loss of body fat, without causing a loss in lean body mass. Chromium assists with the metabolism of glucose, increases the effect of insulin, stimulates synthesis of fatty acids and helps amino acid metabolism.
  • Synephrine - increases metabolic rate, increases caloric expenditure, promotes fat loss and increases energy levels. Synepherine causes the release of noradrenaline (a hormone) at beta-3 receptor sites and creates a chemical reaction that increases the breakdown of fat. Through its stimulation of specific receptors synepherine stimulates fat metabolism without the negative cardiovascular side effects experienced with many fat burning stimulants.
  • Black Pepper Extract  - this is used as an absorption agent (helps your body uptake more of the nutrients) as well as a thermogenic to increase resting metabolic rate.
  • Caffeine Anhydrous - Caffeine Anhydrous is a xanthine alkaloid that is well known in the scientific literature to mobilize fat from fatty tissue and to increase physical performance and mental focus.  It does through stimulation of the central nervous system, which increases the production of epinephrine, which stimulates the process of lipolysis. This happens when it binds to receptor cells called β-adrenergic cells. Caffeine can also help increase energy expenditure, therefore burning fat and carbohydrates.
  • Yerba Mate Extract – Mate, (pronounced mah-tay) the tea made from the Yerba Mate plant, is the South American equivalent to coffee in the United States. Charles Darwin called it “the ideal stimulant”.
    • Upon drinking it, especially for the first time, you feel a significant inflow of strength, energy, and cheerfulness, almost immediately. The herb is a stimulant to the central nervous system, diuretic, anti-rheumatic, mild analgesic and tonic. It stimulates mental and physical energy.
  • N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine – Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning that it can either be obtained through your diet, or it can be naturally synthesized in your body as it is needed. N-acetyl L-tyrosine is a synthetically altered form of tyrosine that contains acetic acid, which increases tyrosine’s bioavailability and absorption into your bloodstream…it’s more expensive, but it works better, which is why we use it.
    • NALT is a precursor of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, which regulate mood. Tyrosine acts as a mood elevator, suppresses appetite and reduces body fat. It is also helpful for stress reduction, fatigue, and anxiety.
  • DMAE – or dimethylaminoethanol, is a compound found in high levels in anchovies and sardines. DMAE increases levels of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, one of the chemicals in the brain that enhances memory, mental focus, and also stimulates muscle tissue.
  • Huperzine A – Huperzine A has been found to help prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, which we just talked about with DMAE.   I included HA for its acetylcholine-sparing function which has a positive impact on mental clarity and focus, but it also has the added benefit of curbing cravings for fried and fatty foods that your body wants when you have an acetylcholine deficiency.
